THE EXPERIENCE

About the Property

"Come for the mountains. Stay because leaving feels too soon."

Musafir Sissu sits in the heart of Lahaul, surrounded by mountains, with Sissu Waterfall behind us and Sissu Lake just a short walk away.

Days here can go in completely different directions. You could spend one doing absolutely nothing except sitting outside with chai, and the next driving deep into the Himalayas towards places like Shinku La and Gonbo Rangjon.

Choose between cosy cottages, duplex cottages, private rooms, camps in season, or a dorm bed if you're travelling light. Come evening, slow down over food, a bonfire, some music and a sky that gets ridiculously good once the lights go out.

Sissu isn't a place to rush through. Stay a little longer. The road gets better from here.

Sissu Lake

📍 Short walk from Musafir

Walk down to the lake with a chai, sit by the water and do absolutely nothing for a while. Sometimes that's the whole plan.

Sissu Waterfall

Sissu Waterfall

📍 Right behind the property

One of Sissu's defining sights, visible from around the village and an easy walk when you feel like stepping outside.

Shinku La

Shinku La

📍 Full-day drive

A high-altitude road trip through increasingly wild Himalayan landscapes towards one of the spectacular mountain passes connecting Lahaul towards Zanskar.

Gonbo Rangjon

📍 Full-day expedition

Drive beyond the usual Lahaul circuit towards one of the region's most striking sacred mountains. Long road. Huge landscapes. Worth waking up for.

CURATED ROADMAP

3 Days in Sissu, The Musafir Way

We've put together the kind of Sissu trip we'd plan for a friend - enough exploring to understand Lahaul, and enough empty space to actually enjoy being here.

12:00 PM Sissu

Check-in at Musafir

Drop the bags. Don't make another plan immediately. You've probably already had quite a drive getting here.

01:00 PM Sissu

Lunch at Musafir

Get something hot, find a sunny corner and let your body catch up with the altitude.

03:00 PM Sissu

Walk to Sissu Waterfall

Visible from everywhere in the village, but worth seeing up close. A gentle walk that gets you outside without burning all your energy on Day 1.

05:00 PM Sissu

Sissu Lake at Sunset

Golden hour over the lake with the surrounding peaks catching the last light of the day. Bring a jacket - mountain temperatures drop fast once the sun goes behind the ridges.

07:30 PM Sissu

Bonfire & Dinner at Musafir

The temperature drops, the fire comes on and dinner is served. Meet whoever else happened to take the same road to Sissu.

10:00 PM Sissu

Look Up

If the sky is clear, step outside once more before sleeping. The stars are part of the itinerary here.

HOSTEL INSIDER TIPDon't underestimate the altitude. Day 1 is deliberately slow - hydrate, eat properly and give yourself time to acclimatise.

HOUSE RULES & MOUNTAIN REALITIES

A few things worth knowing before you arrive.

We believe in good vibes, mutual respect, and safe community living. Please review our core policies before checking in.

Check-in & Check-out

Check-in: 12:00 Noon onwards | Check-out: 10:00 AM

Arriving early? Leave your bags with us and settle into the common spaces while your room is being prepared.

High-Altitude Winters

Sissu winters are serious.

Temperatures can fall well below freezing. During extreme cold, water lines and plumbing can freeze temporarily. Our team does its best to keep things running, but mountain conditions sometimes win.

Heating

Room heaters on request

Room heaters are available on request at an additional charge. Ask the team at the property if you'd like one arranged.

Road & Weather Conditions

Mountain plans can change.

Road access, passes and day trips may be affected by snowfall, landslides, weather or government restrictions. Always check current conditions before heading out.

Seasonal Camps

Swiss camps are seasonal.

They generally operate during the warmer part of the season and may not be available throughout the year.

Water During Extreme Winters

Sub-zero conditions

When temperatures fall far below freezing, water pipelines can freeze. Water may temporarily be provided in buckets, and in exceptional conditions guests may need to use an operational common washroom. That's not us trying to romanticise mountain life. That's genuinely mountain life.
